During World War II, saluting the flag was deemed to be too similar to Hitler's Nazi salute, so Americans began holding their hands over their hearts singing the National Anthem, a tradition that still holds today.
After Hawaii and Alaska were inducted into the Union in 1958, Congress had to create a new flag. It chose a design by Robert Heft, a 17-year-old student who originally made it for a high school project.
Did you know...if Puerto Rico becomes a state ~ which looks likely with an initial referendum to be voted upon on this coming November ~ the flag will have to accommodate a 51st star!!! You wanna design that?
The American flag is an enduring symbol of liberty, democracy, and justice.

Very cool post! Thanks for posting these facts - I had no idea!!
Well this would explain why one of my neighbors hung a flag over their front door today. I though, "hmmm, I guess they are just really excited about Fourth of July in a couple of weeks?" Ha! Silly, Tiff! I loved this post, so much information that I never knew and great photos. God Bless America :)
So educational!! Wow, How will they add another star? Maybe we should get another state so we can have an even number again! :)
You always find the best stuff! I had no idea.
